Senior Scholarships

Scholarships Administered by the York Foundation for Public Education

Deadline April 18, 2024, by 5:00 p.m.

Applications will be available in mid-December.

 

Grafton Kiwanis Club Scholarship - $1,000

The York Foundation for Public Education and the Grafton Kiwanis Club established a student scholarship in 2016. The intended purpose of the fund is to provide a scholarship annually to a Grafton High School senior in Key Club.  Applications should be submitted to the School Board Office at 302 Dare Road, Yorktown, VA  23692, attention Bonnie Gray.

Family of Holly and Sam Richardson Scholarship - $5000 (max award)

The York Foundation for Public Education has partnered with the Richardson family to provide a scholarship to an African American student that is currently a senior at Bruton High School.  The student must plan to attend college, a community college or a trade school after graduating and have a GPA between 2.0 and 3.5.  The amount of the scholarship will depend on where the student plans to further their education after graduation.  Applications should be submitted to the School Board Office at 302 Dare Road, Yorktown, VA  23692, attention Bonnie Gray.

Sister Cities Yorktown Scholarship - $1000

The York Foundation for Public Education has partnered with Sister Cities Yorktown to provide a scholarship to students taking French IV, AP French or that are in the French Honor Society.  The scholarship is available to seniors at any of the five York County School Division High Schools that plan to attend college or a university after graduating.  Applications should be submitted to the School Board Office at 302 Dare Road, Yorktown, VA  23692, attention Bonnie Gray.

Scholarships Administered by the Peninsula Community Foundation (PCF)

The York Foundation for Public Education, Inc. established an endowment fund with the Peninsula Community Foundation in November of 2007. With an initial contribution of $60,000.  The Board of Trustees authorized PCF to invest and manage the funds on their behalf over a long-term period. The goal of the York Foundation for Public Education, Inc. endowment is to protect and grow the principal of the fund while using a portion of the investment earnings to provide the teachers, students and staff of the York County School Division with continuing educational grants, scholarships, and resource development funds. Additionally, the YFPE, Inc. endowed funds will continue to support the overall mission of providing long-term sustainability and financial support to the York County School Division.

 

Mike Tylavsky Scholarship - $500

The York Foundation for Public Education, Inc. established an endowment fund with the Peninsula Community Foundation in December of 2008 through community and family participation for the "Mike Tylavsky Scholarship Fund for Health and Technology Careers", named for the former Principal of Tabb High School. The intended purpose of the fund is to provide a scholarship annually to a York County School Division high school senior on the basis of financial need and the desire to pursue a career in health and technology.

Joseph Levi Scholarship - $500

The York Foundation for Public Education, Inc. established an endowment fund with the Peninsula Community Foundation in February of 2011 through community and family participation for the "Joseph H. Levi Memorial Scholarship Fund." Joseph H. Levi was a respected and well-liked teacher and coach at Tabb High School for 23 years until retiring in 2010. Just months later, Joe was taken suddenly by cancer. The intended purpose of the fund is to provide a scholarship annually to a Tabb High School senior athlete who plans to attend a two- or four-year college or trade school program.

Julie M. Sager Scholarship - $1,000

In March 2013, the Peninsula Community Foundation of Virginia, Inc., collaborated with the York Foundation for Public Education, Inc., to administer the "Julie M. Sager Memorial Scholarship Fund." The Julie M. Sager Memorial Scholarship is named for Tabb Elementary School teacher Julie M. Sager, who taught elementary students for eighteen years before passing away in early 2013 after a six-year battle with cancer. The intended purpose of the fund is to provide a scholarship annually to a Bruton, Grafton, Tabb or York High School senior who plans on pursuing a career in the field of education.

Thomas W. Doggins Memorial Scholarship - $1,000

The  Thomas W. Doggins Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by the Doggins family in 2013 in memory of the former York County School Division teacher. This endowed fund, managed by the Peninsula Community Foundation via the York Foundation for Public Education, Inc. provides a scholarship for a graduating Tabb High School senior, who is in need of financial aid for post-secondary education at a four-year college, university, community college, or technical/trade school. The scholarship is available to a student who has demonstrated a strong work ethic and integrity, has a maximum GPA of 3.5 and exhibits the wonderful characteristics that Mr. Doggins looked for in his students.

Lee Galloway, Jr. Memorial Scholarship - $2,500

The Arthur Lee Galloway Jr. scholarship has been in existence since 1980's and was endowed through the YFPE in January 2014 through family and friends. In 1986, York High school classmates of Lt. Arthur Lee Galloway honored the fallen hero with a bronze plaque hung in the main school hallway. To this day the memory and strong character of Lee lives on in the hearts and minds of his 1965 York High School fellow alumni. This scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving York High School graduate who exemplifies Lee's traits of patriotism, athletics, journalism, sense of humor and love of reading.

Trevor J. McLaughlin Memorial Scholarship - $1000

The York Foundation for Public Education, Inc. established a fund with the Peninsula Community Foundation in January 2019 through community and family participation for the "Trevor J. McLaughlin Memorial Scholarship Fund." The intended purpose of the fund is to provide a scholarship annually to a Bruton High School senior, who plans on pursuing a career in the field of computer science.
